Arunachal Police Arrest Licence-Scam Fugitive After Yearlong Evasion
Naharlagun Police in Arunachal Pradesh arrested 33-year-old fraud suspect Debojit Sharma on April 10 from his residence at Pithaguri Mazgaon in Assam, after prolonged surveillance and coordinated efforts with Assam Police. Sharma was taken into custody in connection with Naharlagun Police Station Case No. 106/25, registered under Section 318(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police allege Sharma cheated multiple people in the Doimukh and Naharlagun areas of the Itanagar Capital Region by falsely promising to facilitate pharmacy and other business licences. According to officials, he collected substantial sums from victims and absconded from the region in 2023.
Investigators say Sharma evaded arrest for more than a year by frequently changing his location and mobile numbers. A sustained surveillance operation using both conventional and technical methods enabled the police to trace his movements and locate him when he traveled to Assam to cast his vote.
The arrest operation was led by Investigating Officer Sub-Inspector N. Rama and involved Head Constable K. Samyor, Constable D. Borah and Constable Sanu T. Raj, carried out under proper supervision and in coordination with the Officer-in-Charge of Bihpuria Police Station in Assam.
Sharma was produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Naharlagun, and has been remanded to judicial custody. Police said multiple cases are registered against him across different stations in Naharlagun and Yupia within the ICR.
Authorities described the arrest as a significant step for victims seeking redress, and said investigations will continue to recover funds and identify any accomplices involved in the alleged licence-facilitation scam.
