Congress Files Case Against Udalguri Candidate Over Pre-Poll Exit
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) lodged a formal police complaint on Thursday, April 9, 2026, against its Udalguri Assembly candidate Suren Daimari after he publicly withdrew from the election and quit the party a day earlier. The FIR, submitted at Bhangagarh Police Station in Guwahati by APCC general secretary (organisation) Ramanna Baruah, accuses Daimari of actions that have harmed the party’s public image and seeks criminal investigation and prosecution.
According to the complaint, Daimari had sought and received the party’s nomination for the 46‑Udalguri Assembly seat, filed nomination papers that were accepted by the Election Commission, and received ₹30 lakh from the party via RTGS to meet election‑related expenses. The FIR sets out these facts as the basis for the party’s legal action.
Baruah’s complaint cites media reports that Daimari resigned from Congress membership on April 8, 2026, and publicly announced his withdrawal from the electoral contest. The FIR quotes Daimari as having described Congress as a “betrayer party” and a “fraudulent party” across various media platforms, statements the party says have caused reputational damage.
The complaint alleges that Daimari’s conduct falls within several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and asks police to investigate, register a case under Sections 314, 316, 318, 356 and other applicable provisions, and take necessary legal action. The filing requests that law enforcement examine the sequence of events and the financial transfer cited in the FIR.
