Imphal Lawyer’s Self-Immolation Bid Over Bishnupur Blasts Foiled
A 32-year-old lawyer from Manipur allegedly attempted self-immolation on Thursday outside the Lok Bhavan (Raj Bhavan) gate in Imphal, dousing himself with kerosene in protest against a recent bomb attack in Tronglaobi, Bishnupur district, that killed two children. The man, identified as Sinam Apollo, arrived alone on a two-wheeler and staged the act near the high-security entrance, police said.
Police sources said Apollo poured kerosene over himself while arguing with officers at the gate and repeatedly expressed anguish over what he called an “unsatisfactory situation.” He initially told officials he had come only to stage a protest and was briefly mistaken for a member of the press.
The strong smell of kerosene alerted security personnel on duty and the situation escalated rapidly, a policeman at the scene said. “He was almost about to light himself up,” the officer added.
Security staff responded quickly by engaging Apollo in conversation and persuading him to step back from the extreme act. Officers assured him that no immediate punitive action would be taken and repeatedly urged him to remain calm.
At one point Apollo demanded to leave the premises, but police maintained contact while additional personnel from the city police arrived to assist. The attempt was foiled without any injuries, according to authorities.
Apollo was detained and taken to a local police station for further questioning. The incident occurred amid heightened tensions and ongoing protests across the Imphal valley following the Tronglaobi blast.
