Explosive UPPL Claim: Cash Distribution by Bijni BJP’s Arup Kumar Dey
Tension briefly flared in Bijni in Assam on Tuesday after workers of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) accused National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Arup Kumar Dey of attempting to distribute cash at the home of the late executive member Singharam Boro in No. 1 Vetagaon, prompting police intervention. No violence was reported, but the allegation sparked a heated confrontation and the matter remained disputed at the time of filing.
UPPL workers said Dey had visited the residence to hand out money, which triggered the exchange on the spot. The party appealed to political leaders and workers to refrain from actions that could disturb local peace, noting Bijni’s long record of communal harmony and peaceful coexistence.
The family of the late Singharam Boro and workers of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) denied the cash-distribution allegation, saying Dey’s visit was personal and that he had longstanding ties with the family and had come only as a courtesy. BPF workers additionally alleged that Dey was confined inside the house and that the gate had been locked during the confrontation, calling the episode unfortunate.
Police, including the Additional Superintendent of Police of Chirang district and other local officials, reached the scene and brought the situation under control. Authorities had not confirmed any wrongdoing at the time of reporting, and the two sides continued to dispute the incident.
