Dharmanagar By-Poll Sees 52.76% Turnout by 1 PM — Midday Momentum
Agartala, April 9, 2026: The by-election for the 56-Dharmanagar Assembly constituency in Tripura recorded an average voter turnout of 52.76 percent by 1 p.m., reflecting steady polling from the start of voting.
Official figures showed turnout at 15.63 percent by 9 a.m., rising to 33.50 percent by 11 a.m., before crossing the halfway mark in the afternoon. Polling began at 7 a.m. across all 55 polling stations, where voters queued from early morning to cast their ballots in the bypoll prompted by the death of BJP MLA and former Assembly Speaker Biswabandu Sen.
Chief Electoral Officer Brijesh Pandey said the process had been orderly and uninterrupted, adding that there were no reports of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) malfunctions till the afternoon. Returning Officer Debjani Chowdhury said polling had been peaceful so far and was being closely monitored by election authorities.
Six candidates are contesting the seat: BJP’s Jahar Chakraborty, Congress nominee Chayan Bhattacharya, CPI(M)’s Amitabh Datta, SUCI’s Sanjay Chowdhury, Independent Brajalal Debnath, and Amra Bangali’s Bibhas Ranjan Das.
A total of 46,183 electors are eligible to vote in the constituency, comprising 22,380 men, 23,763 women and 924 first-time voters.
