Agartala, April 9, 2026 — A Bangladeshi national in police custody attempted to flee GB Hospital on Thursday while receiving medical treatment but was quickly recaptured by on-duty police, preventing any major security breach, officials said. The incident occurred during a hospital visit arranged after the detainee fell ill.
The detainee has been identified as Sajal Rishi Das, reportedly a resident of Brahmanbaria district in Bangladesh. He had been arrested earlier on charges of illegally crossing the India–Bangladesh border and was lodged at the Bishalgarh Central Correctional Facility prior to being brought to GB Hospital for treatment.
According to police sources, Das attempted to exploit a momentary lapse in supervision during his medical care and tried to escape the hospital premises. Alert officers deployed with him intervened promptly and apprehended him within a short time, officials added.
The attempted escape has raised questions about security arrangements and monitoring protocols for foreign nationals held on charges of illegal border crossing, with observers asking how the detainee managed to attempt flight while under custody.
