Guwahati, April 9 — Polling for the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections begins today at 7:00 am and will continue until 6:00 pm across all 126 constituencies, as more than 2.5 crore registered voters are expected to cast their ballots to decide the state’s government for the next five years. Votes will be counted and results declared on May 4.
In a notable change from the 2021 elections, which were held in three phases, this year’s contest is being conducted in a single phase, heightening the logistical and security demands on election authorities. The 2021 poll recorded an 82.04% voter turnout, and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance had then retained power with 75 of the 126 seats.
Election officials completed final logistical preparations on Wednesday, distributing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), ballot units and VVPAT machines, and briefing designated polling personnel. Commissioning of EVMs has been reported complete across all constituencies, with thousands of ballot and control units and VVPATs readied for deployment.
Security has been intensified statewide, with additional polling staff and law enforcement deployed in sensitive and vulnerable areas to ensure peaceful voting and the maintenance of law and order throughout polling hours. Authorities say measures are in place to handle contingencies and ensure the integrity of the process.
Political attention will focus on voter turnout, performance in key battleground constituencies and the overall mood on the ground, factors likely to shape political alignments in Assam for the coming term.
