Empowering Change: ADB Team Engages with HYDRAA Chief on Musi Restoration and Environmental Protection

A delegation from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) visited the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on April 7, 2026, to discuss vital initiatives aimed at rejuvenating the Musi River. The meeting, attended by ADB officials and HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath, focused on the agency’s ongoing efforts to restore lakes throughout Hyderabad.

The discussion emphasized the interconnectedness of the city’s water bodies and the significance of their revival for improving the ecological health of the Musi River. During the meeting, representatives from HYDRAA showcased archival footage that illustrated the previous state of several lakes, highlighting the notable transformations achieved through restoration projects. Among those featured were Bathukamma Kunta in Amberpet, Bam Rukn-ud-Daula Lake in the Old City, and Nalla Cheruvu in Kukatpally.

Restoration of these lakes is not just a local concern but part of a broader initiative to enhance urban resilience and promote sustainable water management in Hyderabad. ADB’s involvement underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing environmental challenges. By focusing on revitalizing water bodies, HYDRAA and ADB aim to create a healthier ecosystem that benefits both residents and biodiversity in the region.

Commissioner Ranganath acknowledged the crucial role that restored lakes play in managing stormwater, reducing urban flooding, and improving air quality. He stated, “The coordination between various agencies and stakeholders is essential for our success. The support from ADB will enable us to expand our restoration projects and enhance the city’s water bodies further.”

The discussions also touched upon future plans for additional restoration and protection projects that align with the city’s long-term sustainability goals. As Hyderabad continues to grow, such initiatives are increasingly vital for maintaining environmental balance and ensuring that urban development does not compromise local ecosystems.

The meeting concluded with an agreement on continued collaboration, illustrating a shared commitment to fostering a greener future for Hyderabad. This partnership between ADB and HYDRAA not only supports local communities but also serves as a model for similar urban initiatives worldwide.

As the city moves forward with these essential projects, the revitalization of the Musi River and its associated lakes remains an important focal point for enhancing urban quality of life and ecological health. Authorities hope that these efforts will inspire greater community engagement and awareness regarding the importance of maintaining Hyderabad’s natural resources. The collaborative work being undertaken promises to pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient urban environment.

The ongoing initiatives signify a pivotal step toward rejuvenating Hyderabad’s water bodies, reinforcing the region’s ecological integrity while promoting sustainable urban planning practices. As these efforts unfold, they are expected to yield long-term benefits not only for the Musi River but for the city as a whole.

By highlighting these developments, both the ADB and HYDRAA are setting a precedent for responsible environmental stewardship that could influence urban development strategies around the globe.
