The Election Commission of India has announced that the Assam Legislative Assembly election will be held in a single phase on 9 April 2026 across all 126 constituencies, assuring voters of stringent monitoring and a secure, transparent polling process. The commission said preparations have reached a final stage and that extensive administrative and security frameworks are in place to safeguard the integrity of the poll.
Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Gowe said authorities are overseeing a multi-layered monitoring system that will concentrate on law and order, the movement and supply of cash, and compliance with the Model Code of Conduct. Officials stressed that the system is designed to detect and deter irregularities at every stage of the election exercise.
To boost transparency, polling stations across the state will be equipped for live webcasting. More than 31,000 polling centres have been prepared for real-time streaming, enabling monitoring from both district headquarters and state-level control rooms simultaneously.
Security has been beefed up, particularly in sensitive areas, with deployment of Central Armed Police Forces including units of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Micro-observers will be stationed at vulnerable booths to ensure heightened vigilance throughout the polling process.
The commission has also focused on voter convenience at polling sites, providing essentials such as drinking water, waiting areas, seating arrangements and designated points for depositing mobile phones. Special assistance and facilities have been arranged to ensure inclusive participation for persons with disabilities.
Logistical preparations include the mobilisation of a large workforce of more than 150,000 polling personnel. Election equipment assembled for the exercise comprises thousands of ballot units, control units and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) devices, with reserve teams and equipment ready to respond to unforeseen situations.
The electorate in Assam exceeds 20 million voters, reflecting the state’s diverse demographic profile. The roll includes more than 4.2 million young voters aged 18–19, over 250,000 voters aged 80 and above, and more than 200,000 persons with disabilities. Under legal provisions, voters aged 85 and above and eligible persons with disabilities may vote from home via postal ballot; hundreds of thousands have already registered to use this facility.
The Election Commission reiterated that these measures aim to ensure a tightly monitored, secure and accessible election, maintaining the credibility of the voting process while enabling broad participation across Assam.
