S&P 500 futures experienced a modest uptick on Tuesday, signaling a shift in market sentiment as the deadline set by President Donald Trump for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz approached. Futures tied to the S&P 500 rose by 0.2%, reversing an earlier dip, while Nasdaq 100 futures also climbed 0.2%. Additionally, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures gained 99 points, or 0.2%.

During a news conference on Monday, Trump reiterated his firm stance on Iran, threatening to target the nation’s power plants and bridges if the strategic waterway was not reopened by 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday. He explained his decision to extend the deadline, stating that it felt “inappropriate the day after Easter.” “They have ’til tomorrow,” Trump remarked. “Now we’ll see what happens. I can tell you they’re negotiating, we think in good faith. We’re going to find out. We’re getting the help of some incredible countries that want this to be ended, because it affects them also.”

In parallel to the rising market futures, Axios reported that discussions were underway involving the U.S., Iran, and other mediators, focusing on terms for a potential 45-day ceasefire aimed at concluding the ongoing conflict. While the ceasefire is one of several proposals under consideration, Reuters highlighted that the U.S. and Iran were also reviewing a plan brokered by Pakistan to bring an end to hostilities.

Despite these heightened tensions, the U.S. markets managed to close higher on Monday, suggesting investors remain optimistic about a quick resolution. Barbara Doran, founder and CEO of BD8 Capital Partners, expressed this sentiment on CNBC’s “Closing Bell: Overtime,” stating, “Everybody was betting that it’s going to be short term, and I think the market still is, and frankly, I still am too. The market will say, ‘OK, it’s going to be over soon,’ and then we can resume where we’re going, which is starting the year very bullish. And now you have continued fiscal stimulus from the defense spending.”

The market’s resilience reflects a belief that the geopolitical situation may stabilize soon, allowing investors to refocus on economic fundamentals and growth opportunities. As negotiations progress, all eyes will remain on developments regarding both the ceasefire discussions and the implications for market dynamics, especially as the April 6 deadline looms.

This evolving story underscores the interplay between international relations and financial markets, emphasizing how political decisions can create ripple effects that impact investor confidence and economic forecasts. As the situation unfolds, investors and analysts alike will be closely monitoring the outcomes of these discussions and their potential influence on market performance in the coming days.
