Tragic News: Nancy Guthrie’s Untimely Death Sparks Chilling Ransom Notes Demanding Bitcoin for Her Location
TMZ has reported unsettling developments in the ongoing case of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie, who has been missing since February 1. On Monday, local time, the outlet received two ransom notes demanding “half a bitcoin” each, claiming to reveal the whereabouts of Guthrie’s body and information about her alleged kidnappers. This announcement coincided with Savannah’s return to the weekend edition of the show, marking her first appearance since her mother went missing.
According to The New York Post, these latest notes come from the same individual who previously demanded one bitcoin for details about Nancy’s disappearance almost two months ago. TMZ founder Harvey Levin shared the disturbing content of the new communications during an episode of “TMZ Live.” One note reportedly states, “We got another letter today from this person, an email saying, ‘I know where her body is, and who the kidnapper is, give me half a bitcoin and I’ll tell you.’” The sender further declared, “She is dead,” adding that they have been disregarded as a scam despite offering information since mid-February.
Levin noted the sender’s frustration over wasted resources in the ongoing search, emphasizing their view of how authorities have dismissed their claims. The most recent letter also stated, “I saw her alive with them in the state of Sonora, Mexico,” suggesting possible sightings that could lead to critical information. While the person claims to hold crucial intel, they contend that they are not involved in the “horrific crime,” asserting they have lived outside the U.S. for over five years. According to this individual, their motivations are not purely financial; they expressed a desire for “a fair start” in life without needing to enter witness protection.
TMZ has reported the ransom claims to the FBI, as the sender has demonstrated persistence despite the legal risks associated with such hoaxes. Despite the troubling circumstances, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, which is leading the investigation, stated it takes all tips and leads seriously and coordinates closely with the FBI. Sheriff Chris Nanos and his team have yet to identify any suspects in the case.
This case has been marred by confusion and despair, with Savannah Guthrie previously indicating that many ransom notes received by her family may be fraudulent. However, she expressed a high level of belief in the authenticity of the two recent notes that prompted their response. Nancy Guthrie, who requires daily medication and has a pacemaker, was last seen on January 31 when her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, dropped her off at her home.
As the situation continues to unfold, the profound uncertainty and anguish surrounding Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remain palpable, as both family and authorities strive for answers amid a cloud of disinformation and fear.
