Manipur Bomb Kills 2 Children in Bishnupur, Protests Leave 5 Hurt
Two children — a five‑year‑old boy and his five‑month‑old sister — were killed and their mother critically injured in a pre‑dawn bomb attack on a house in Bishnupur district, Manipur, police said. The explosion at Tronglaobi Awang Leikai occurred at around 1:05 am, damaging part of the home and plunging the area into unrest.
Police said unidentified assailants hurled the explosive at the house while the children were asleep. Their mother, a nurse who works in Guwahati and had been visiting for a religious function, was rushed to Raj Medicity in Imphal and is in intensive care.
Anger over the attack spilled onto the streets as Meitei protesters tried to storm the Moirang police station and set fire to its gate. Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel fired to disperse the mob, and at least five people were reported injured in the ensuing violence.
The governor’s office ordered suspension of internet and mobile data services in five districts — Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur — in a bid to contain further unrest. Roadblocks, tyre burnings and protests were reported across valley districts, disrupting traffic and heightening tensions.
Chief Minister Y. Khemchand chaired a high‑level security review as authorities moved to restore order. Visiting the injured woman at Raj Medicity, he condemned the attack, calling it “a barbaric act [and] an outright assault on humanity and a direct attempt to derail the hard‑earned peace in Manipur.” He added, “Those responsible will be identified, hunted down, and dealt with firmly under the law.”
Local police and security forces have been deployed to sensitive areas as investigations continue. Officials said efforts to identify the perpetrators are under way, and investigations into the blast and the subsequent clashes are ongoing.
