Tragic Truth Unveiled: The Heart-Wrenching Story of the 2020 Sattankulam Father-Son Custodial Torture Death Case

Nearly six years after the tragic deaths of trader P. Jayaraj and his son J. Benicks due to custodial torture at the Sattankulam Police Station in Tamil Nadu, justice is finally being served. On March 23, 2026, the First Additional District and Sessions Court in Madurai convicted nine police personnel involved in the case. Judge G. Muthukumaran is set to announce the sentencing on April 6, marking a significant moment in this long and arduous legal battle.

The horrifying incident occurred during the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown in June 2020. It emerged from a confrontation over alleged violations of lockdown rules when Jayaraj, who operated a mobile phone sales and service outlet, was taken into custody. His son Benicks rushed to the police station seeking his release, only to be met with brutal treatment. Both father and son were subjected to severe physical abuse throughout the night, resulting in serious injuries that ultimately led to their deaths days later.

On June 22, 2020, Benicks succumbed to uncontrollable bleeding in a hospital, and the following day, Jayaraj died from chest pain, sparking widespread outrage and protests across Tamil Nadu. Human rights organizations condemned the police brutality and the way in which the judicial process initially handled the case, leading the Madras High Court to take suo motu cognizance of the events.

Aimed at ensuring accountability, the High Court ordered a judicial inquiry and transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The subsequent CBI investigation revealed that the accused policemen had conspired to detain Jayaraj and Benicks without legitimate cause, with claims that the traders had violated lockdown protocols later proven untrue. The CBI’s findings substantiated that the violence inflicted by police was so severe it led to the fatal outcomes they experienced.

The trial has faced delays since the High Court mandated its completion within six months in March 2021, citing that “justice delayed is justice denied.” However, multiple extensions were granted, leading to accusations that the defense sought to prolong proceedings. The High Court has consistently seen through these attempts, dismissing multiple bail petitions from the accused, who remain imprisoned in Madurai Central Prison.

On March 23, 2026, the court found all nine defendants guilty of murder and other offenses under the Indian Penal Code. Judge G. Muthukumaran has called for reports regarding the medical condition and professional conduct of the accused, as well as any mitigating circumstances that may influence sentencing. The judge’s upcoming decision on the quantum of punishment will be closely watched, as it represents a crucial step in addressing the cycle of police violence in India and reiterating the importance of justice for victims of state brutality.

The case of Jayaraj and Benicks remains emblematic of systemic issues within law enforcement, highlighting the urgent need for reforms to ensure such brutalities are never repeated. As civil society continues to advocate for justice, this trial serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of accountability within the police force.

In summary, this tragic event culminates in a significant legal milestone, shedding light on the ongoing struggles against police impunity and the fight for justice in Tamil Nadu.
