Nagaon, April 6, 2026: Hours after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma denied Congress allegations that his wife holds multiple foreign passports and owns assets abroad, Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on Monday challenged the BJP leader to repeat his denial under oath on the Bhagavad Gita.
Speaking to reporters after an election rally in Raha, Gogoi — described in the original report as the Assam Congress president and Jorhat MP — pressed Sarma on whether he or his family are hiding business interests and properties overseas. The Congress leaders had on Sunday asked whether Sarma’s wife holds three foreign passports, owns property in Dubai, runs companies in the United States, or has placed assets in shell firms.
Gogoi issued a direct challenge to Sarma to deny the claims publicly and under oath. “I challenge him to deny the claims under an oath on the Bhagavad Gita,” he said, arguing that any undisclosed foreign assets not listed in an election affidavit could lead to cancellation of Sarma’s candidature.
Gogoi also posed specific questions about a possible Dubai Golden Visa, ownership of property in Dubai, the nationality on any such visa, and whether any family member operates businesses abroad. He said Sarma should welcome an investigation if he has nothing to hide and warned that a Congress government in Assam would pursue probes into alleged undisclosed foreign holdings and business networks. “Legal action will be taken against all illegal properties, businesses and networks linked to him,” he added.
Sarma, speaking at a Guwahati press conference on Monday morning, said the allegations were fabricated to influence poll results and called them “punishable under the law.” He said the Opposition’s claims were based on false information circulating from a Pakistan-based social media group. The Chief Minister also said his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, has filed a police complaint against Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera over the charges.
Khera on Sunday alleged that Sarma’s wife holds passports of the UAE, Egypt and Antigua and Barbuda, owns two properties in Dubai and has assets tied to shell companies in the US.
