Congress has accused Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and his family of hiding vast assets abroad, prompting a sharp denial from the chief minister who called the claims “fake” and AI-generated. At a New Delhi press conference, senior Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that the Sarma family looted Assam’s wealth, channelled it to foreign accounts and built property holdings worth thousands of crores of rupees in the United States and Dubai.
Khera cited a document dated August 8, 2022, saying that two luxury properties in Dubai’s upscale Al Barsha South Fourth area are registered in the name of the chief minister’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma. He said one is a hotel suite and the other a luxury flat. Khera further alleged that the chief minister failed to disclose these foreign assets in his election affidavit, which he said would violate electoral law and strip Sarma of the moral right to hold office if proven.
In a more explosive claim, Khera said the family set up a company in the U.S. state of Wyoming called “Riniki Bhuyan Sharma Asset Collective LLC,” and put its budget at roughly 3,476 crore U.S. dollars (1 crore = 10 million). He alleged the chief minister, his wife and their son Nandil Sharma planned to siphon off about 52,000 crore rupees from the entity. Khera argued that Wyoming’s reputation as a low-regulation state makes it a favored jurisdiction for hiding ill-gotten funds.
Khera also accused the family of holding multiple foreign passports and preparing to flee the country if they lost elections, invoking comparisons with high-profile fugitives. All of these are allegations presented by the opposition and have not been independently verified in the reporting.
Responding at a press briefing on Monday, Dr. Sarma mounted a forceful counter-attack, calling the passports and documents shown by Congress entirely fabricated and produced using artificial intelligence. He suggested the controversy could be part of a deeper political conspiracy involving foreign elements, including Pakistan, and rejected the accusations as baseless.
The controversy has heightened political tensions in Assam. Congress has threatened to take the matter to the Election Commission and the courts, while the ruling party brands the claims an election-time smear. Authorities have indicated that any definitive findings will depend on forthcoming police or legal investigations, and the allegations remain unproven pending official inquiry.
