The first round of Gujarat RTE admissions for Class 1 opened on April 4, 2026; parents can apply online at rte.orpgujarat.com until April 17, 2026, 12:00 pm. The drive is being held under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act and covers seats reserved in private unaided schools for children from economically weaker and socially disadvantaged groups.
Under Section 12(1)(c) of the RTE Act, 2009, private schools must reserve at least 25% of seats in Class 1 (applicable up to Class 8) for eligible children. Students admitted through this provision in recognised private primary schools are entitled to an annual financial assistance of Rs 3,000, which the state government transfers directly to parents’ bank accounts to help meet costs such as books, footwear, transport and other school needs.
To qualify, a child must be at least six years old and the family’s annual income must not exceed Rs 6 lakh. Parents are required to upload supporting documents when applying: proof of date of birth, residence proof, caste/category certificate and an income certificate issued by a competent authority. Applicants may also need to submit an income tax return; if no ITR has been filed, a self-declaration stating non-taxable income should be provided where applicable.
Applications are submitted through the official portal. On the site parents create a new application, complete the required fields, and rank their preferred schools; only preferred schools should be listed and ranked at the time of submission. The portal also provides the revised admission priority categories, the online application form, a list of required documents and the participating school list.
Last year’s initial round allotted 86,274 seats, but only 80,378 admissions were confirmed by parents by the May 8 deadline. The 2025 RTE drive saw a large response with 2,38,916 online applications, indicating rising demand for reserved seats under the scheme.
