The Rengma Students’ Union (RSU) has strongly condemned the alleged physical assault, harassment and extortion of two members of the Rengma community from Phenda village in Tseminyu district, Nagaland. According to the RSU, the victims, described as unemployed youths who trade small quantities of agricultural produce including yongchak, were travelling to Imphal on the night of March 22, 2026 and were intercepted in the early hours of March 23, 2026 between Keithelmanbi and Sapermeina in Kangpokpi district.
The Union alleges the two youths were forcibly taken to an undisclosed location where they were intimidated, illegally detained and physically assaulted. The assailants reportedly demanded a large sum of money; when the victims could not pay, the harassment continued and they were robbed of cash and a mobile phone.
Condemning the incident as “cowardly and inhumane,” the RSU said the attack not only violated the personal safety and dignity of the victims but also threatened the livelihoods of many young traders who depend on small-scale agriculture and local markets. The Union emphasised that such attacks create an atmosphere of fear for daily wage earners and small traders who travel the route between Nagaland and neighbouring Manipur.
The RSU has demanded the immediate identification and arrest of those responsible and called for a swift, impartial investigation by law enforcement authorities. It also sought concrete assurances for the safety and security of civilians, particularly traders and daily wage earners travelling along the affected route.
Warning that failure to act promptly could force the Union to take measures to protect its members, the RSU expressed solidarity with the victims and urged authorities to prevent further incidents that endanger vulnerable communities and local commerce.
