DESAM Protests at BOSEM Over Substandard Exam Paper-Demands Probe
Imphal: Volunteers of the Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) stormed the office of the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur (BOSEM) on Thursday, demanding an immediate, transparent probe by the Commissioner of Education into an alleged scam over the supply of substandard, non-watermarked paper used for textbooks and examination answer scripts, and calling for the responsible firm to be blacklisted.
Protesters reached the BOSEM gate and hurled rotten eggs into the complex, prompting police to push them back and a brief confrontation. After an additional police contingent was deployed, demonstrators were driven about 100 metres to the nearby Nupilal complex. Some students reportedly sustained minor injuries during the clash.
O. Romesh, DESAM president, told reporters at the protest that the student body wants a halt to the use of poor-quality, non-watermarked paper in examinations and a full investigation into the alleged tender irregularities in paper procurement. He urged action against officials he held responsible for the substandard supply, specifically naming the BOSEM chairman and secretary.
Romesh also pushed for efficient, high-quality production of textbooks to protect students’ interests. DESAM has previously demanded removal of the BOSEM chairman over alleged irregular recruitment practices and warned it would escalate its agitation if the concerns-especially the quality and integrity of examination materials-are not addressed.
The protests underscore wider anxieties about exam fairness and the quality of educational materials in Manipur, issues DESAM says directly affect students’ academic outcomes.
