Surging Demand for EVs: How the Iran War Drives a Powerful Shift Away from Oil Dependency

An electric vehicle (EV) charges at a station in Tehran, capturing a moment of transformation in the automotive landscape. Analysts predict that the ongoing Middle East crisis will accelerate the shift from traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to EVs, albeit gradually. The conflict in Iran has severely disrupted oil exports through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas. This disruption has spotlighted the global reliance on precarious fossil fuel supply chains, while soaring oil and gas prices have rattled energy markets and raised inflation concerns.

Since the war began in late February, car-selling platforms in the U.S. and Europe have reported a marked increase in consumer interest in EVs. Autotrader noted a 28% uptick in inquiries for new EVs and a 15% rise for used ones as of March 26, while Octopus Electric Vehicles observed a 36% growth in leasing inquiries following the onset of hostilities. Despite this surge in interest, major U.S. automakers like Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis have pulled back on their EV strategies, announcing significant write-offs and restructuring costs attributed to lackluster demand and shifting political climates.

Julia Poliscanova, senior director for vehicles and e-mobility supply chains at Transport & Environment, expressed frustration that the transition to EVs is discussed only in crisis contexts. Steffen Michulski, a senior consultant at JATO Dynamics, emphasized that the increasing oil prices make battery electric vehicles (BEVs) more appealing, particularly for high-mileage drivers. Michulski noted that energy independence could drive more consumers to consider EVs, but warned against oversimplifying the situation, as economic uncertainties and inflation factors may counteract this trend.

Cox Automotive reported that consumer behavior towards EVs is generally slow, despite rising gasoline prices. They predict that sustained high gas prices over six months will be needed to shift buying habits significantly. Challenges such as cost, charging infrastructure, and range anxiety persist, with the average new EV price in the U.S. still higher at around $55,300 compared to non-EV models at $48,768. As a result, U.S. EV sales are projected to fall by 28% in the first quarter, totaling 212,600 units. Interestingly, electrified vehicles, which include hybrids, are gaining market share, forecasted to make up a record 26% of new vehicle sales.

In Europe and Asia, the energy crisis sparked by the Iran war could catalyze a more rapid transition to EVs compared to past fossil fuel crises. Poliscanova suggested this crisis might differ from previous ones, where markets quickly reverted to ‘business as usual’ after the crisis subsided. Damage to Middle Eastern energy infrastructure may delay the return of stable supplies, making the shift to electrification more pressing.

An analysis from Transport & Environment revealed that electric cars are already reducing the European Union’s oil imports. With nearly 8 million EVs in the EU expected to save about 46 million barrels of oil by 2025, that translates to significant economic benefits. Additionally, petrol drivers are likely to be five times more vulnerable to rising oil prices than EV owners. Meanwhile, countries in Asia like Vietnam and Thailand, which have affordable EV models from Chinese manufacturers, are poised for even greater shifts away from oil dependency.

As the world grapples with energy challenges, the momentum towards electric vehicles could reshape not only automotive markets but also broader economic landscapes. By considering these dynamics, policymakers and consumers could navigate the transition to a more sustainable future.
