BJP Candidate Narrowly Escapes Alleged Armed Attack in Khowai, Tripura
A late-night incident at Ramchandra Ghat in Tripura’s Khowai district on March 30 has escalated tensions during the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) election period after BJP candidate and party secretary Devid Debbarma reported an alleged armed attack on his residence. Debbarma said a group of miscreants targeted his home and a vehicle belonging to a BJP worker parked on the premises, and he described the incident as an attempt on his life, alleging the attackers were armed with firearms and sharp weapons and were backed by the Tipra Motha Party. No police confirmation on injuries or arrests was immediately available.
Debbarma, who is contesting the Ramchandra Ghat constituency, told reporters the assailants damaged property on his premises and threatened those present. He framed the episode as politically motivated and tied it to broader campaign tensions in the run-up to TTAADC polling.
Reacting to the attack, Debbarma criticised the opposition’s claims of unity and development, asking, “Is this the ‘development’ they talk about? Destroying property and threatening lives is this their idea of unity?” He accused the Tipra Motha Party of fostering an atmosphere of fear in the area.
Despite the alleged attack, Debbarma said his campaign would continue uninterrupted. “My resolve remains unshaken. I am committed to working for the peaceful progress and development of Ramchandra Ghat,” he said, adding, “We believe in the language of love, not hate. You can attack us, but you cannot break our love for the people.”
The episode has heightened concerns about security and the conduct of free and fair elections in the region, with political friction appearing to intensify as polling approaches. Authorities have not yet provided an official account; the incident will likely increase scrutiny on local security arrangements and election-day preparedness.
