Noted Bengali actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee died on Sunday, March 29, 2026, after drowning in the sea during a shoot at Talsari in Odisha. The 42-year-old actor reportedly fell overboard while boating and was later declared brought dead at Digha State General Hospital, authorities said.
According to initial reports and eyewitness accounts, Banerjee was at Talsari for a shooting assignment and, after the day’s work, walked alone toward the water. Crew members rushed to his aid after he went missing from a boat and transported him to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Co-actor Diganta Bagchi said Banerjee may have become entangled in something underwater, leading to the drowning. Officials moved the body to the hospital for formalities, and local authorities are coordinating further arrangements. The exact circumstances that led to the incident remain unclear.
Born on October 16, 1983, in Kolkata, Banerjee rose to prominence with his breakthrough role in the 2008 Bengali film Chirodini Tumi Je Amar. He went on to appear in films including Love Circus, Shono Mon Boli Tomay, Na Hannyate and Kagojer Bou, as well as television shows and the web series Sahaj Katha.
Banerjee’s personal life had been widely covered; he married co-star Priyanka Sarkar and the couple share a son. They separated in 2017 and reunited in 2023.
The incident has renewed attention to an unusual coincidence with the death of Assam music icon Zubeen Garg, who died on September 19, 2025. Singapore’s State Coroner Adam Nakhoda on March 25, 2026, ruled Garg’s death an accidental drowning, upholding the Police Coast Guard’s investigation as “comprehensive and thorough” and concluding the death was “simply due to an unfortunate and tragic accidental drowning,” with no evidence of coercion or foul play.
Observers noted that one of Garg’s best-known Bengali songs, “Piya Re Piya Re” from Chirodini Tumi Je Amar, ties the two figures culturally, and the similarity in the reported causes of death has drawn attention across social and entertainment circles.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock and sorrow, saying, “I am shocked, deeply saddened to hear the news that the distinguished, young, and popular actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee is suddenly no longer among us. I am unable to comprehend what exactly happened. He was one of my favourite actors and a person I truly admired. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family, loved ones, and countless admirers.” She called his passing an “irreparable loss to the Bengali entertainment industry.”
