An enraged mob set fire on Sunday, March 29, to the Wung Tangkhul Region office of the NSCN-IM in Ukhrul district, Manipur, after local residents blamed the group for the killing of four members of the NSCN Eastern Flank in neighbouring Kamjong district. The attack raised immediate concerns about public safety in both Ukhrul and Kamjong as tensions spiked across the area.
Residents said the office was targeted because locals held the NSCN-IM responsible for the earlier assault. Security forces moved to contain the unrest and have been keeping a close watch as the situation remained unstable.
The violence followed an ambush late on Saturday, March 26, at the Hongbei village junction. The NSCN Eastern Flank reported that four of its personnel were killed between about 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm by armed individuals led by 2nd Lieutenant Mathotmi of Shihai Khunou village. According to the Eastern Flank, the team had earlier travelled to Kasom Khullen via Hongbei to inspect timber transport and other activities along the Indo‑Myanmar border, and were attacked on their return.
The Eastern Flank said the attackers, whom it identified as including 2nd Lieutenants Mathotmi and Starling, opened fire and killed four members on the spot while two others managed to flee.
The NSCN-IM issued a public note distancing itself from the Ukhrul attack, saying it was “deeply upset by the deaths” and that “no orders had been issued from its headquarters to target any other faction.” The organisation said it has begun an internal review to establish the facts and would act against anyone found responsible under its regulations, and urged the public not to “react to rumours or unverified messages circulating online.”
Security forces remain deployed in the area as authorities monitor developments and seek to prevent further escalation.
