Gunfight Erupts After Militants Attack Army Post in Bishnupur, Manipur
A late-night gunfight between security forces and suspected militants in Manipur’s Bishnupur district lasted about 30 minutes, officials said on March 26, after suspected armed Kuki militants opened fire at an Indian Army post late on Wednesday. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The exchange of fire began when, according to a police statement, “suspected armed Kuki militants opened fire” toward a post in Phougakchao Awang Leikai. The incident was reported from the Phouljang/Gothol area, officials said.
The police statement said the attack occurred “at approximately 11.40 pm on Wednesday,” prompting an immediate response from personnel on the ground. “The Indian Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (58th Battalion), deployed in the area, responded swiftly by returning fire towards the source,” the statement added, noting the shootout continued for “approximately 30 minutes.”
Following the encounter, security forces launched a joint search operation. The Army, CRPF, state police and the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) have been combing the site of the firing and adjoining hill areas to track any fleeing militants and assess the situation.
Officials said the situation remains under watch and that forces are maintaining a presence in surrounding areas. “The situation is being closely monitored, and security forces will continue operations in the surrounding hill areas,” the statement said.
Authorities urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information and to remain calm as operations continue. The report includes inputs from PTI.
