Justice Served: NIA Sentences Aasiya Andrabi to Life for Terrorism, Two Associates Face 30 Years in Shocking Verdict

A New Delhi court has sentenced Kashmiri separatist leader Aasiya Andrabi to life imprisonment, alongside 30-year terms for her associates, Sofi Fehmida and Nahida Nasreen, in a significant case handled by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Andrabi, the founder of the pro-separatist outfit Dukhtaran-e-Millat, was convicted of multiple offenses, including conspiracy to wage war against India and involvement in terrorist activities under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Judge Chander Jit Singh of the Additional Sessions Court found all three defendants guilty of several serious charges in a ruling delivered from Karkardooma Court. Andrabi received her life sentence for her involvement in terror conspiracy and criminal conspiracy, including attempts to incite rebellion against the Indian state. Along with life imprisonment, she was also handed ten-year sentences for supporting a terror organization and being associated with one, along with additional penalties for promoting enmity among different communities.

The court imposed a total fine of ₹8 lakh on Andrabi. Meanwhile, her associates were sentenced to 30 years for similar offenses related to the UAPA and were also fined ₹7 lakh each. The court’s decision followed a conviction on January 14, 2026, marking a crucial step in the ongoing efforts by Indian authorities to curb separatism and terrorism in the region.

This case dates back to Andrabi’s arrest in 2018 when the NIA charged her with offenses tied to waging war against the state and promoting communal strife. The NIA’s charges allege that Andrabi and her associates utilized various media platforms-including social media and television channels-to promote insurgency and disseminate messages deemed hateful towards India.

Dukhtaran-e-Millat is considered a part of the broader separatist movement in Kashmir, linked to the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, which has been classified as a banned terrorist organization by the Indian government. The NIA claims that the group has played a significant role in inciting violence and rebellion against the Indian state by rallying the Kashmir populace with support from foreign terrorist organizations, particularly those based in Pakistan.

The implications of this judgment resonate beyond the individuals involved, signaling a broader commitment by authorities to combat separatism and related violence in the region. As terrorism continues to pose a significant challenge, the legal actions taken against leaders like Andrabi highlight the government’s efforts to maintain stability and security in Kashmir.

The sentencing of Andrabi and her associates underscores the serious stance taken by the Indian judiciary against terrorism. As the NIA moves forward in its investigations, the case remains pivotal in the national dialogue about Kashmir’s future and the challenges of maintaining peace in a historically contentious region.
