Alert: 776 Cleared for 124 Seats; Dhekiajuli & Barpeta (SC) Pending
Guwahati, March 24, 2026 — Scrutiny of nomination papers for the Assam Assembly elections has validated 776 candidates across 124 constituencies, the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer said on Tuesday, a day after nominations closed. The office confirmed that verification has been completed in 124 of the state’s 126 Assembly seats.
The verification process for the two remaining constituencies — 24 Barpeta (SC) and 65 Dhekiajuli — was adjourned until 11 am on March 25, the statement said. Election officials said a total of 815 candidates had filed 1,389 nomination papers; duplicate and invalid submissions were weeded out during scrutiny, producing the revised figure of validated candidates.
Pending scrutiny in Dhekiajuli attracted particular attention after Congress nominee Batash Orang lodged objections against BJP candidate and minister Ashok Singhal. In a letter to the Returning Officer, Orang said he had “checked the nomination form with documents filed by the BJP candidate” and alleged anomalies in the papers.
At the time of filing this report, the Election Commission of India’s official website did not show Singhal’s nomination as accepted. Election authorities will complete the remaining checks before the final list is confirmed.
The Election Commission has reiterated that the last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 26, 2026, until 3 pm. With scrutiny still under way in two constituencies and objections pending, the coming days will determine the final roster of candidates for the Assam Assembly polls.
