Empowering Voices: PM Modi Speaks Passionately on West Asia Crisis-LPG Concerns, Indian Security, and a Call to Action in Lok Sabha
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Lok Sabha on Monday regarding the ongoing conflict in West Asia, emphasizing that India has sufficient energy supplies to meet domestic needs despite the unprecedented challenges posed by the war, particularly involving Iran. He reassured citizens that the government is committed to ensuring uninterrupted supplies of petrol, diesel, and gas, with the aim of minimizing disruption for ordinary households.
Highlighting the ongoing crisis that has now persisted for over three weeks, Modi pointed out its severe implications for both the global economy and human lives. He stressed the urgent need for resolution, noting, “The whole world is urging all parties for the earliest possible resolution of this crisis.” The Prime Minister addressed the multifaceted challenges confronting India, including economic, national security, and humanitarian pressures as a result of the conflict.
India’s economic interests are at stake due to its extensive trade relations with the countries involved in the conflict, which also encompasses critical trade routes. Modi reiterated the importance of a united parliamentary voice in expressing India’s concerns, especially considering nearly a crore Indians working in Gulf nations and many Indian crew members operating in the affected waters.
The Prime Minister detailed the government’s rapid response to protect Indian nationals in conflict zones. He mentioned that every Indian in these regions has received necessary assistance since the war began and cited his direct communications with leaders from West Asia, who assured him of the safety of Indian citizens. To cater to those injured, enhanced medical treatment is being guaranteed, and support is being provided to bereaved families.
Further discussing support mechanisms, Modi noted that Indian missions in the affected countries are actively assisting citizens while maintaining a 24/7 operational presence for emergencies. Consequently, over 375,000 Indians have returned safely since the onset of the conflict.
On the energy supply front, the Prime Minister acknowledged the significance of crude oil and gas shipments via the Strait of Hormuz, which have become more complicated due to the ongoing war. He emphasized ongoing government efforts to protect families from potential hardships, including prioritizing domestic LPG usage and bolstering its production. India has diversified its energy import sources from 27 to 41 countries over the past decade, thus reducing reliance on any single region.
Modi also mentioned India’s strategic petroleum reserves, which currently exceed 5.3 million metric tonnes, with plans underway to increase this to over 6.5 million metric tonnes. He underscored India’s increasing refining capacity over the past eleven years and the government’s proactive engagement with global suppliers to ensure the safe passage of essential goods.
Turning to the agricultural sector, Modi reassured that India has ample food grain stocks and is facilitating Kharif sowing. He highlighted past instances when the government shielded farmers from global price hikes, ensuring their financial stability.
Amid rising electricity demand, Modi confirmed that sufficient coal stock is maintained across power plants, marking a record of producing 100 crore tonnes of coal for two consecutive years. He noted that renewable energy now constitutes half of India’s total installed power generation capacity, bolstered by significant strides in solar power and other renewables.
Concluding his address, Modi called for unity and resilience, urging vigilance against opportunism amid the conflict. He expressed confidence in the government’s ability to navigate these challenges, asserting, “When every government and every citizen of this country walk together, we can challenge every challenge.”
This resolute statement underscores India’s commitment to diplomacy while advocating for peace and stability in the region, aiming for a quick resolution to the ongoing crisis.
