Tripura POCSO Court Hands 20-Year Sentence for Raping a Minor
A special POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court in Khowai, Tripura, has sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 after finding him guilty of raping a seven-year-old tribal girl in July 2020.
According to the court record, the accused abducted the child from her home and sexually assaulted her in a nearby jungle while her parents were away. He allegedly threatened the girl with severe consequences if she told anyone, including her parents.
Despite the threats, the girl informed her parents, who lodged an FIR at Teliamura police station on July 21, 2020. Investigating officer Kamala Rani Murasing arrested the accused from his residence the following day. The charge sheet was subsequently filed in court in October 2020.
The conviction and sentence were handed down by the special POCSO court after trial. The case underscores the application of the POCSO framework in prosecuting sexual offences against minors and follows prompt reporting and police action that led to the early arrest and prosecution of the accused.
