Tourism Minister R. Rajendran officially launched “Wildlife of Tamil Nadu,” a visually stunning coffee-table book produced by The Hindu Group in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, during an event hosted by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) in Chennai on Saturday. This initiative highlights the rich natural heritage and ecological diversity of the state.
The book takes readers on a captivating journey through Tamil Nadu’s varied landscapes, showcasing everything from lush forests to unique wildlife habitats and vibrant cultural history. Among the significant areas featured are the Western Ghats, which include famed wildlife sanctuaries like Mudumalai, Anamalai, and Kalakkad-Mundanthurai. These locations are essential habitats for a variety of species, including elephants, tigers, hornbills, and notably, the endangered lion-tailed macaque and the Nilgiri tahr.
Additionally, the publication shines a light on Tamil Nadu’s coastal wetlands, particularly Pulicat Lake and Point Calimere, known for hosting thousands of migratory birds each winter. A dedicated chapter on the Gulf of Mannar illustrates the region’s coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and mangrove islands, all of which contribute to a rich marine ecosystem, enhancing the biodiversity of the area.
In his remarks at the launch, Minister Rajendran emphasized the importance of the book as a reminder for future generations about the need to conserve Tamil Nadu’s natural treasures. The event was attended by key figures in the tourism sector, including K. Manivasan, Additional Chief Secretary of the Tourism, Culture, and Religious Endowments Department, and J. Innocent Divya, Commissioner of Tourism and Managing Director of the TTDC. Ramya Kannan, Health Editor and Chief of Bureau at The Hindu, was also present, underscoring the collaborative effort behind this significant publication.
