The Assam government has sanctioned Rs 20 crore to compensate residents of Kaliabor who did not receive earlier financial assistance after devastating floods, Chief Minister Keshab Mahanta’s office announced during the minister’s visit to the area. The relief aims specifically at households and individuals who were left out of previous aid programmes.
Mahanta said the package was approved to ensure flood victims who had earlier been excluded from compensation schemes finally receive the support they deserve. He announced that the funds will be transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism to promote transparency and timely delivery.
Officials explained the decision was taken to plug gaps in earlier relief distribution and to reach people who suffered losses but missed out on aid due to administrative or procedural hurdles. The move is intended to simplify disbursal and reduce delays associated with manual or paper-based distribution.
Flooding remains a recurring challenge in several parts of Assam, repeatedly damaging homes, crops and livelihoods. Local administrators said the newly sanctioned compensation is expected to provide much-needed financial relief to families in Kaliabor who are still rebuilding after the disaster.
Authorities did not provide a beneficiary count or a detailed timeline for disbursal in the announcement; they said further implementation details will be communicated locally as the DBT transfers are processed.
