Apple Inc. is gearing up to launch its highly anticipated foldable iPhone, featuring significant iOS updates designed to enhance multitasking capabilities. This new device aims to introduce iPad-like layouts and the functionality of side-by-side apps, marking a significant shift in Apple’s approach to smartphone design.
Sources familiar with the project report that the foldable iPhone will showcase an internal display comparable in size to an iPad mini, and will also have an external screen about the size of a small iPhone. This wide aspect ratio for the inner display contrasts with the narrower formats currently seen in competing foldable devices, potentially setting Apple apart in the market.
With the foldable iPhone’s anticipated release this fall, Apple faces strong competition from rivals like Samsung, which first introduced its foldable phones seven years ago. The new device is not only designed for better video viewing but will also allow developers to modify their iPhone applications to more closely resemble those on the iPad, thus enhancing user experience.
Despite offering enhanced functionality, the foldable iPhone will operate on the standard iOS rather than iPadOS, thus maintaining a simpler multitasking experience that diverges from the more complex interface of iPadOS. This means it won’t support multiple windows at once, but it will allow for two applications to be displayed side by side, akin to features offered by models from Samsung and Google.
Apple has identified two major issues that have plagued existing foldable devices: narrow display dimensions and visible creases when the device is open. The company opted for a new display technology that reduces the crease appearance while acknowledging it won’t completely eliminate it-not an easy feat, and one that has contributed to Apple’s later entry into this market.
Durability is another concern Apple has prioritized, aiming to enhance the longevity of the screen as it is opened and closed. The external display, though shorter than most current iPhone screens, will introduce an innovative hole-punch design for the front-facing camera, abandoning the traditional pill-shaped notch. To implement this design, Apple has removed its Face ID technology and integrated Touch ID into the side button, marking the return of a fingerprint sensor to the iPhone lineup for the first time since the third-generation iPhone SE in 2022. The decision stems from the need for a thinner front panel that cannot accommodate the Face ID sensor array.
For the inner display, Apple is testing two camera integration methods-one that hides the camera entirely under the screen and another utilizing the hole-punch cutout. Early results suggest that the under-display option produces inferior image quality.
The rear of the foldable iPhone will house two cameras, one less than high-end counterparts currently on the market. Nevertheless, the device’s robust internal display and enhanced productivity features, coupled with an approximate price tag of $2,000, are expected to position it prominently in Apple’s smartphone lineup while attracting fans of foldable Android devices.
