With the Assam Assembly election day drawing near, senior leaders from several opposition parties met in Guwahati today to present a united challenge to the ruling BJP. Representatives of the Congress, AJP, APHLC and the CPI(M) pledged coordinated campaigning in the coming weeks, saying they will hold joint rallies across the state to highlight what they described as the BJP government’s alleged misrule and corruption. The press conference in Guwahati included MP Gaurav Gogoi, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Jon Ingti Kathar and Suprakash Talukdar; Akhil Gogoi was reported absent.
Speaking at the event, MP Gaurav Gogoi said the four parties were “embarking on a new journey from today” and that talks were underway with Raijor Dal and the CPI about broader cooperation. He said the alliance will take its message to people across Assam through a series of joint public meetings and accused the BJP of governing solely for the sake of power. He framed the contest as “a fight of principles and ideals,” aimed at exposing alleged wrongdoing by the state administration.
Gaurav Gogoi also launched a sharp attack on AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal, dubbing him the chief minister’s “108” and alleging that Ajmal has intervened in times of trouble for Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He claimed that secret understandings have benefited the AIUDF and warned that politics in the state has sunk to a low level as a result of such arrangements.
Lurinjyoti Gogoi, identified in the conference as president of the Assam National Parishad, echoed the criticism of the BJP and said opposition forces were now united, with more parties expected to join the coalition. He dismissed the BJP’s “Jan Ashirwad Yatra” as a “curse journey” and said public anger has grown over issues ranging from cattle theft to what he characterized as the government’s failure to deliver justice in the case of popular artist Jubin Garg.
The leaders presented the Guwahati meeting as the start of coordinated action ahead of the polls, emphasizing joint outreach and sustained campaigning to challenge the BJP at the ballot box.
