Devastating US Assault: IRIS Fateh Rumored Sunk in Catastrophic Attack on Iran’s Navy – 17 Ships Lost!
The United States Central Command (US CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday that it has targeted nearly 2,000 sites in Iran since launching Operation Epic Fury. During a briefing, US CENTCOM official Brad Cooper emphasized the operation’s impact on Iran’s naval capabilities, stating, “We’re also sinking the Iranian navy… the entire navy.” He confirmed the destruction of 17 Iranian vessels, including a significant submarine, which is now reported to have a substantial hole in its side.
Cooper underscored the operation’s effectiveness, asserting, “Today, there is not a single Iranian ship underway in the Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, or Gulf of Oman.” He pledged that the U.S. efforts would not cease, adding a clear warning to Iran’s maritime activities.
Following the briefing, reports emerged from open-source intelligence platform OSINTtechnical, indicating that Iranian media had begun circulating rumors about the IRIS Fateh, the lead submarine of its class, being attacked near Bandar Abbas. In a related report, Visegrád 24 claimed that the IRIS Fateh had indeed been destroyed by U.S. forces.
The IRIS Fateh, commissioned in the mid-2010s, is a key asset for the Iranian Navy. It participated in Iran’s notable Zulfiqar-99 military exercises in September 2020, marking its first public appearance since its launch. Measuring 157 feet in length and weighing approximately 600 tonnes, the Fateh class submarine is relatively small compared to its U.S. counterpart, the Ohio-class submarines, which displace around 18,750 tonnes. Despite its modest size, the Fateh was designed as a patrol submarine capable of engaging surface targets.
While it has not engaged in combat, the Fateh was involved in a notable incident earlier this year when Iran claimed it forced a U.S. submarine to surface in the Gulf. Iranian navy commander Shahram Irani stated that the Fateh detected a submerged U.S. submarine and executed maneuvers that compelled it to surface. The U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, however, dismissed this account as “more Iranian disinformation,” further complicating the narrative surrounding Iran’s naval capabilities.
As tensions in the region escalate, US CENTCOM has demonstrated a determined stance against Iranian maritime threats. The operational success of destroying Iranian ships raises questions regarding the future of Iran’s naval operations and its broader implications on international shipping in strategic waterways.
