Assam Congress Shifts MLA Abdus Sobhan Ali Sarkar to Redrawn Gauripur
The All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Wednesday released its first list of 42 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, naming sitting Golakganj MLA Abdus Sobhan Ali Sarkar as the Congress nominee for the newly reconfigured Gauripur Assembly constituency (No. 7). The selection marks a key move by the party as it fields candidates across the state ahead of the polls.
AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal announced the list, signalling Congress’s formal entry into the electoral contest in Assam. Sarkar’s shift to Gauripur reflects a wider political recalibration following the state’s recent delimitation exercise that redrew constituencies in Dhubri district.
Under the new boundaries, Dhubri’s assembly segments have been reduced from six to five. Bilasipara West constituency has been dissolved and its areas redistributed among neighbouring seats. The reshaped Gauripur has emerged as one of the largest constituencies in Assam, now comprising 33 gaon panchayats.
Several localities formerly part of Golakganj — including Gauripur town wards and villages such as Dhepdhepi, Doomardah, Gaikhowa and Moterjhar — are now within the Gauripur constituency. The realignment brings significant voter shifts and alters the electoral map in a district long seen as politically competitive.
For Sarkar the move has both political and personal dimensions. His native village Sonakhuli, previously in Golakganj, now falls within Gauripur. He remains the sitting MLA of Golakganj until the end of the current term but welcomed the party’s decision, saying he had long wished to represent his home constituency.
Speaking to the media, Sarkar said he has been actively working in Gauripur since the Lok Sabha elections and voiced confidence in Congress’s prospects. He asserted that the party is gaining grassroots momentum and predicted a Congress-led coalition under Gaurav Gogoi would form the next government in Assam.
The candidature underlines how the delimitation has forced parties to rethink strategies in Dhubri and neighbouring areas. With constituencies reshaped and voter lists adjusted, the coming weeks will test how effectively parties convert organisational changes into electoral gains.
