Orchid specialist Mohan Pradhan of Sikkim has unveiled a new hybrid named “Seujia Kaziranga” after eight years of research and cross-breeding, a development he says honors Assam’s natural heritage and botanical richness. The cultivar is the result of sustained pollination control, long-term observation and efforts to stabilise flowering cycles before a hybrid can be officially recognised.
The name carries layered meaning: “Seujia,” translated from Assamese as “lush green,” evokes Assam’s verdant landscape, while “Kaziranga” pays tribute to Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its biodiversity and the world’s largest population of the one‑horned rhinoceros. Pradhan’s choice frames the orchid as both a scientific achievement and a symbolic salute to the region’s conservation legacy.
Orchid experts note that creating and naming a stable hybrid involves meticulous laboratory and field work — controlling pollination, tracking parentage across flowering seasons, and ensuring consistent traits over multiple generations. Only after such stability can a cultivar be described, named and introduced to collections or gardens.
The release of Seujia Kaziranga coincides with a wider biodiversity push in Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to inaugurate the Kaziranga Orchid Garden, an initiative intended to boost eco‑tourism, raise conservation awareness and foster scientific study of native orchid species. Officials say the garden will serve as a conservation hub, research platform and visitor attraction.
Assam hosts more than 300 orchid species, many endemic to India’s Northeast, and specialists expect the garden and new hybrid to strengthen the state’s reputation as a centre for botanical diversity. Environmentalists add that naming the orchid after a cross‑state natural icon highlights cooperative conservation across the region.
For Assam, Seujia Kaziranga is presented as both a scientific milestone and a cultural emblem — a single bloom that blends botany, regional identity and conservation pride.
