On Saturday, February 28, residents and activists in central Assam renewed protests demanding immediate construction of a four‑lane national highway connecting Kaliabor Tiniali to Numaligarh, raising tensions across the region. The demonstration, organized by the “Committee for Construction of a Four‑Lane National Highway (Kaliabor Tiniali–Numaligarh),” called for the current road linking Kaliabor Tiniali via Kuwaritola, Hatbor and Jakhalabandha to be widened and upgraded as a national four‑lane route without delay. The action sparked strong local reactions and disrupted normal life in parts of the district.
Under the committee’s leadership, protesters enforced a complete shutdown in Jakhalabandha, stopping routine transport and business activity and bringing daily life to a halt. As a symbolic rebuke of what they described as government attempts to silence legitimate demands, many members of the committee staged a silent protest with black cloths tied across their mouths. The shutdown and demonstrations reflected deep local frustration over what organizers say has been long‑standing neglect.
Protesters argued the proposed four‑lane highway is vital to reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety and accelerate economic development in the area. They said traffic on the existing stretch has risen sharply in recent years, making expansion urgent for the benefit of commuters, traders and transport operators who rely on this corridor. The committee framed the road as a necessary lifeline for everyday movement and commerce in the region.
Issuing a stern warning, the committee said the agitation will have political consequences if construction does not begin soon. Organizers threatened that failure to address the demand before the 2026 state assembly elections would hurt the incumbent local MLA’s prospects.
