Trump Administration Blacklists Anthropic: Bold AI Firm Stands Firm Against Pentagon Pressures!
Former President Donald Trump has issued a directive for all U.S. government agencies to “immediately cease” using technology from the artificial intelligence startup Anthropic. In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced a six-month phase-out plan for various departments, including the Defense Department (DoD), which has been utilizing Anthropic’s products to varying degrees.
This announcement follows Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth’s action on X (formerly Twitter), where he designated Anthropic as a “Supply-Chain Risk to National Security.” This designation came after the AI company refused to comply with demands regarding the application of its technology. Anthropic, which signed a $200 million contract with the Pentagon in July, was seeking assurances that its AI models would not be employed for fully autonomous weapons or widespread domestic surveillance of Americans, a request the Pentagon strongly opposed.
The deadline for Anthropic to agree to the Pentagon’s conditions, allowing technology use for all lawful military purposes, lapsed on Friday without a resolution. “Anthropic’s stance is fundamentally incompatible with American principles,” Hegseth stated in a follow-up post. He emphasized that the partnership between Anthropic and the U.S. armed forces has been permanently altered and announced that the company would continue to provide its services for up to six months to ensure a smooth transition to a more aligned vendor. “America’s warfighters will never be held hostage by the ideological whims of Big Tech,” he declared.
Trump’s post condemned Anthropic’s “selfishness” for jeopardizing U.S. lives and national security. He directed every federal agency to sever ties with the company, asserting, “We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again!”
Senator Mark Warner, vice chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, criticized Trump’s order, suggesting it raises concerns about whether national security decisions are being made based on careful analysis or political motives. “President Trump and Secretary Hegseth’s efforts to intimidate and disparage a leading American company pose an enormous risk to U.S. defense readiness,” Warner said.
Adding to the scrutiny, Elon Musk, a significant backer of Trump’s 2024 campaign, owns xAI, which directly competes with Anthropic and OpenAI. Musk has openly criticized Anthropic on his social media platform, claiming that the firm “hates Western civilization.”
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had previously stated that the company “cannot in good conscience” permit the Pentagon to use its models without restrictions. He expressed hope for a reconsideration from the DoD, noting that Anthropic’s technology serves substantial value to the armed forces. While extending an offer to facilitate a smooth transition should the partnership be terminated, Amodei affirmed the company’s commitment to supporting the military within its ethical guidelines.
Moreover, OpenAI-another major player in the AI industry-echoed similar concerns regarding its technology’s military applications. CEO Sam Altman confirmed that OpenAI shares “red lines” with Anthropic, opposing the use of its technology for mass surveillance or autonomous lethal weapons. Last year, OpenAI also secured a $200 million contract with the Pentagon, focusing on non-classified applications.
The Pentagon declined to comment further, directing all inquiries to Trump’s announcement. As the situation unfolds, the implications for U.S. defense strategies and the future of AI technology procurement remain to be seen.
