BJP: Kejriwal Sparks Resounding Political Response from Public
NEW DELHI, Feb 27 — A special court on Friday discharged Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal and 20 others, including Telangana Jagruthi president K. Kavitha, in the Delhi excise policy case, saying there was a “lack of evidence.” Special Judge Jitendra Singh refused to take cognisance of the CBI chargesheet, observing that the agency’s narrative of a conspiracy rested on conjecture and did not withstand judicial scrutiny.
BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi called the discharge a “technical matter” and said the party would study the judgment before issuing a “structured response.” Speaking at the BJP headquarters, the Rajya Sabha MP said the people of Delhi had already given Kejriwal a “political response on political grounds” and that the investigating agency would decide its next steps on technical grounds.
Trivedi also raised procedural questions, noting that “hundreds of mobile phones and SIM cards, evidence in the case, were destroyed,” and asked why that happened and how it contributed to the lack of evidence. He added: “It is also worth considering that if there was no evidence at all, how did the court allow the charges to be framed? All the charges were baseless, yet those were framed.”
An emotional Kejriwal, breaking down before reporters after the verdict, called the case the “biggest political conspiracy” in independent India and said the court had proved that he, Manish Sisodia and the AAP were “kattar imandar” (honest). He alleged the excise case was fabricated to finish off the AAP and directly accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of being behind the plot.
Officials said the CBI will challenge the discharge of Kejriwal and Sisodia in the high court “immediately.” Asked about Kejriwal’s accusations, Trivedi described them as political and sought to counter by recalling that, he said, the AAP had allied with the Congress early in its history.
Responding to the Congress’s claim that the development was the BJP’s “script” ahead of upcoming assembly polls, Trivedi challenged the opposition to state whether it was “sad, happy or terrified” by the court’s decision and noted that he believed Congress leader Ajay Maken had been among the first to level allegations about the liquor matter.
