Delhi Shock: Teen Killed, Neck Broken in Cricket Dispute
A neighbourhood cricket game in west Delhi’s Tilak Nagar turned deadly on Monday evening after a 15-year-old boy, identified as Nishant, was allegedly assaulted by three juveniles and later died, police said on Tuesday. The attack followed an argument at a local park; family members and locals rushed Nishant to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. An FIR was registered at Tilak Nagar police station and all three juveniles were apprehended, the police said.
According to police, the incident began with a verbal spat between Nishant and a 12-year-old boy during the match. The 12-year-old returned home and reportedly informed two cousins, aged 17 and 13. At about 7.22 pm the three youths confronted Nishant in the area and a fight ensued. The teenager sustained injuries to his neck and head, fell unconscious and was taken to hospital, officials said.
Nishant is survived by his parents and three brothers; his father works as a tea vendor in the neighbourhood. His mother, Jyoti, described the assault as far more brutal than a routine fight and accused the attackers of breaking her son’s neck. “They broke my son’s neck. Which children don’t fight? But they killed him,” she told PTI, adding that when the family went to the police station they were ignored and some relatives were beaten and detained.
Relatives also alleged police apathy at the station. Nishant’s aunt, Rachna, said officers harassed the family, beat her brother and tore their clothes, and that they were not given a copy of the FIR. “Three boys killed my nephew, but no action is being taken,” she told PTI.
An uncle, Rinku, said the alleged assailants first came to the family home asking for Nishant. He recounted that his sister-in-law, who was washing clothes, questioned them and that the boys then took Nishant away, choking and beating him. “At first we thought it was a minor scuffle like children often have, but then we were told he was dead,” Rinku said.
A brother of the teenager, who said he had been in the park earlier, described seeing Nishant unconscious with swelling on his neck, punch injuries on his cheek and slap marks on his face. Tension has risen in the area since the death, and family members remained gathered outside the police station demanding swift action against the accused juveniles.
