Urgent: Centre Flags Alarming Drop in Nagaland PM SHRI Enrolment

A two-day high-level review of PM SHRI schools in Nagaland on February 20–21 flagged falling enrolment, weak transition rates and pockets of poor academic performance, prompting directions for corrective action and a targeted diagnostic study. Dinesh Kumar, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence and Central Nodal Officer (CNO) for PM SHRI Schools in Nagaland, led the inspection to assess implementation of the Centre’s flagship PM SHRI (PM Schools for Rising India) initiative under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Kumar visited several institutions in and around Dimapur — PM SHRI GHSS Chumoukedima, PM SHRI GHS Naharbari, PM SHRI GHS Thahekhu, and PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya, Project Sewak — accompanied by the Additional Deputy Commissioner and the District Education Officer of Dimapur, along with officials from Samagra Shiksha. He met students and teachers to discuss the government’s goal of building model schools that provide holistic, quality education aligned with NEP 2020.

The review raised specific infrastructure concerns at some schools, including shortages of classrooms, inadequately equipped laboratories, lack of school auditoriums and insufficient sanitation facilities. Kumar said these gaps would be recorded in his report to the Centre to seek necessary support.

A coordination meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Dimapur on February 20 brought together district administration officials, the DEO, the principal of DIET Dimapur, Sub-Divisional Education Officers, EBRC officials, heads of PM SHRI schools and Samagra Shiksha Nagaland representatives. At the meeting the DEO presented a status report on the six pillars of PM SHRI: Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment; Access and Infrastructure; Human Resource and School Leadership; Inclusive Practices and Gender Equity; Management, Monitoring and Governance; and Beneficiary Satisfaction.

Kumar expressed concern over declining enrolment and poor transition particularly from Class IX to Class X in certain schools, and noted a low pass percentage at PM SHRI GHS Burma Camp, Dimapur. State officials were directed to make a special visit to that school to carry out a diagnostic study, identify causes of underperformance and prepare a targeted action plan to improve outcomes.

The review called for school-wise action plans to plug gaps and ensure each PM SHRI institution develops into a centre of excellence. The visit concluded with an inspection of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Project Sewak, and Kumar briefed Nagaland Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen, IAS, in Kohima on February 21 about the review’s findings and proposed follow-up measures.
