Pakistan Launches Bold Strikes on Militant Camps Along Afghanistan Border After Heartbreaking Suicide Attacks

Pakistan launched targeted airstrikes against hideouts of the Pakistani Taliban and associated militant groups along its border with Afghanistan early Sunday. The country’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, announced that these “intelligence-based, selective operations” were focused on seven camps belonging to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), as well as an affiliate of the Islamic State operating in the region. Although the precise locations of the strikes were not disclosed, reports on social media indicated that some operations occurred within Afghanistan.

According to Pakistani media reports, the strikes specifically targeted camps linked to the militant groups Fitna al Khwarij and Daesh Khorasan Province. Tolo News detailed that the Pakistani Air Force had conducted multiple airstrikes in various districts, including a religious seminary in Bermal, Paktika province, and operations in Khogyani and Argun in Nangarhar province, among others. Geo News described the military actions as being executed “with precision and accuracy,” responding to recent suicide attacks that had shaken regions like Islamabad, Bajaur, and Bannu during Ramadan.

These military actions follow a particularly deadly attack in Bajaur, where a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle at a security post, resulting in the deaths of 11 soldiers and a child. Authorities identified the assailant as an Afghan national. Just hours prior, another suicide bomber targeted a security convoy in Bannu district, killing two soldiers, one of whom was a lieutenant colonel. In light of this surge in violence, military officials have stated they will continue operations against those responsible for the attacks, regardless of their location.

Tarar emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to peace and stability in the region, while asserting that the safety of its citizens remains the country’s top priority. He claimed that there is “conclusive evidence” linking recent attacks-such as a devastating bombing at a Shiite mosque in Islamabad that killed 31 worshippers-to militants operating under the direction of their leadership in Afghanistan. The Pakistani government has repeatedly urged the Afghan Taliban to take reliable measures to prevent such militant activities from being launched from Afghan soil. However, Tarar criticized what he characterized as a lack of substantial action from Afghan authorities.

The Foreign Office in Pakistan signaled a firmer stance on the issue, with spokesman Tahir Andrabi stating, “Pakistan very legitimately demands that Afghan territory should not be used for terrorism inside Pakistan.” He warned that while Pakistan is exercising patience, “all options would obviously remain on the table” until this demand is met.

Militant violence has surged in Pakistan in recent years, primarily attributed to the TTP and various Baloch separatist groups. Although the TTP maintains a close alliance with Afghanistan’s Taliban, which regained power in 2021, Islamabad accuses the TTP of operating from Afghan territory-claims that both the group and Kabul deny. Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been strained since deadly border skirmishes last October, despite a Qatar-mediated ceasefire that has largely held. However, talks in Istanbul aimed at formalizing a resolution have not yet succeeded, leaving diplomatic ties tenuous.

This recent escalation underscores the complex dynamics between Pakistan and Afghanistan, raising serious concerns about regional security and the ongoing threat posed by militant groups in the area.
