A consultative meeting to strengthen child protection mechanisms was held at the National Law University, Guwahati (NLUJ) in Amingaon, bringing together more than 16 civil society organisations (CSOs) from across the region to prioritise child safety and rights. The session, held under the umbrella of the Government of India’s Mission Vatsalya, aimed to deepen collaborative efforts between government bodies, academic institutions and non-government actors to protect children’s well‑being.
NLUJ Vice-Chancellor K. V. S. Sarma, speaking at the event, stressed the need for joint action, saying that “collective responsibility and sustained cooperation are essential to create a secure environment for children.” His remarks underlined the meeting’s focus on shared accountability and long‑term coordination across sectors.
Hosted by the British Asian India Foundation and the Northeast Centre for Equity Action on Integrated Development (NEAID) as part of the KAWACH Programme, the programme provided a platform for participants to review existing protection frameworks, exchange best practices and identify areas for policy and programmatic alignment. Organisers described the gathering as a significant step toward strengthening regional systems for child protection.
Participants committed to pooling expertise and resources to pursue large‑scale goals in child safety, including improving referral mechanisms, capacity building and community engagement. The meeting highlighted the importance of sustained networks and coordinated interventions to ensure the rights and safety of children across diverse geographies in the Northeast.
