Shillong Declares Feb 21 Holiday to Mourn Late MP Ricky AJ Syngkon
The Meghalaya government has declared a public holiday in the Shillong Parliamentary Constituency on February 21, 2026, to allow residents to attend the funeral of late MP Ricky AJ Syngkon and pay their respects. The move, announced by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, applies to all districts within the constituency and is intended to facilitate public participation in the funeral rites.
Chief Minister Sangma said the day, which had earlier been listed as a working day under compensatory holidays, will now be observed as a holiday in honour of the departed leader. Authorities said the suspension of normal work will help supporters, well‑wishers and the general public attend funeral services and related ceremonies.
Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon, 54, a Member of Parliament representing the Voice of the People Party (VPP), collapsed while playing football in Shillong and died on Thursday. He was initially treated at the Community Health Centre in Mawiong and later taken to Dr H. Gordon Roberts Hospital in Jaiaw, where doctors pronounced him dead at around 8:42 pm; the cause was reported as suspected cardiac arrest.
Political leaders expressed grief at Syngkon’s death. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma described him as a compassionate public servant committed to the welfare of his people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, according to reports.
The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly suspended its proceedings on Friday as members mourned Syngkon’s passing. Speaker Thomas A. Sangma said the House would confine itself to obituary references for the day and that a revised schedule of sittings would be issued subsequently.
