India’s aspirations in artificial intelligence took center stage at the India-AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, where key figures in technology, government, and policy convened to discuss the transformative power of AI. The summit highlighted how this technology is poised to reshape economies and governance. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the need to democratize AI, aiming to build sovereign capabilities as India strives to establish itself as a trusted AI hub in the Global South.

Vaishnaw described AI as a foundational technology that significantly alters decision-making and work processes. He introduced India’s comprehensive five-layer AI strategy, which focuses on applications, models, computing, infrastructure, and energy. “The true value of technology lies in ensuring that its benefits reach the masses,” he stated, underlining the government’s commitment to making AI accessible to all sectors, including healthcare and agriculture. He also announced the “New Delhi Frontier AI Commitments,” a framework initiated by leading global and Indian AI companies aimed at responsible AI usage.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran likened AI to monumental infrastructure developments like steam engines and electricity, asserting that AI is “the infrastructure of intelligence.” He stressed the importance of making AI tools accessible to marginalized communities, citing examples of rapid adoption among rural participants. Chandrasekaran portrayed India as a nation of “AI optimists,” urging the creation of capabilities across the entire technology stack to maintain competitiveness.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei praised India’s unique-drive energy during his address, indicating the company’s commitment to the country by recently opening an office in Bengaluru. He highlighted AI’s potential to address insurmountable global challenges, from curing diseases to alleviating poverty, while also cautioning about risks such as misuse and economic displacement.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai celebrated AI as the “biggest platform shift of our lifetimes,” encouraging ambitious dreams in humanity. He pointed out India’s expanding role in the global AI landscape, noting the establishment of a full-stack AI hub in Visakhapatnam, which is part of Google’s $15 billion infrastructural investment in the country. He highlighted AI’s ability to solve pressing scientific issues, referencing AlphaFold’s revolution in drug discovery, while stressing the importance of responsible AI development.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres delivered a stark warning against allowing a select few to dictate AI’s future. He advocated for the creation of global standards to ensure that AI serves everyone’s interests, urging governments to support a proposed $3 billion Global Fund for AI development aimed at equitable access. Guterres raised concerns about AI’s potential to exacerbate existing inequalities and called for safeguards to protect vulnerable populations.

French President Emmanuel Macron underscored India’s digital advancements, terming them a global benchmark. He praised India’s capacity to create a digital identity framework for 1.4 billion people and its impressive payment system, highlighting the importance of responsible innovation amid rising competition in AI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized AI as a global collective responsibility. He advocated for its democratization to empower marginalized groups, unveiling the ‘MANAV Vision’ centered on ethical governance. Modi called for international standards to ensure AI technologies are trustworthy and beneficial, reiterating the need for safety measures to mitigate risks like deepfakes.

As global economies increasingly turn to AI, India aims to harness its potential while addressing operational challenges to ensure that the benefits of this transformative technology are accessible to all.
