Triumphant Assam’s Nayanmoni Clinches Silver at 7-Nations Cup
Nayan Moni Saikia, Birmingham Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Arjuna awardee, won the silver medal in the women’s singles at the 7-Nations Cup Lawn Bowls Championships 2026, which concluded at Stadium Juara, Bukit Kiara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. Saikia finished runner-up after a closely contested tie-breaker, losing 1–2 to Malaysia’s Nor Farah Ain Abdullah.
The defeat came in a tight final that highlighted Saikia’s competitive form against top international opposition. Hosts Malaysia dominated the invitational tournament, claiming all four gold medals across the men’s and women’s singles and pairs events. The championships featured several high-ranked nations and served as a key competitive outing ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Another Assam player, Putul Sonowal, also represented India at the event, adding to the state’s presence at the international meet. The tournament’s venue, Stadium Juara, was the same site where Saikia competed at last year’s World Championships, an experience she said proved valuable.
“I’m thankful to our sports-encouraging Chief Minister for helping us participate in the World Championships here last year. That gave me the much-needed exposure to the conditions, and I capitalised on it to give a tough fight this time,” Saikia told reporters, acknowledging Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for facilitating her earlier participation.
