Transforming Lives: Haryana’s Bold New Initiatives to Eliminate TB and Inspire Hope
Haryana’s health secretary, Sumita Misra, on Wednesday unveiled a series of innovative patient-centric initiatives under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP). These initiatives come as part of a robust commitment to combat tuberculosis (TB) within the state, showcasing a proactive approach to public health.
From January to December 2025, Haryana recorded an impressive 12.52 lakh sputum tests, surpassing its target of 9.75 lakh, thereby achieving a rate of 3,848 tests per lakh population. This comprehensive testing effort has led to the notification of 88,689 tuberculosis cases, underscoring the urgency of the ongoing fight against this infectious disease.
In her address, Misra launched several crucial initiatives aimed at enhancing TB management and patient outcomes. A dedicated state TB cell website will provide real-time access to TB services, marking a significant step towards transparency and public engagement. Additionally, she announced the establishment of Haryana’s first sewing machine center, designed to empower TB survivors by helping them regain financial independence.
To improve clinical outcomes, a guidance document has been introduced that focuses on reducing TB mortality rates. Misra also revealed plans for a high-profile awareness campaign featuring celebrities, aimed at elevating public understanding of TB prevention and treatment. Furthermore, the integration of the cash management initiative, SNA Sparsh, with the web-based patient management system, Nikshay, aims to streamline TB control efforts and enhance service delivery.
The additional chief secretary for health highlighted that the new website will significantly improve access to TB-related services for the general public. Misra emphasized that the treatment outcomes have been encouraging, with 74,483 patients successfully treated in 2024, resulting in a commendable treatment success rate of 90%. During this period, HIV testing coverage reached an impressive 98%, and diabetes screening was extended to 96% of TB patients, ensuring comprehensive management of co-morbid conditions.
Under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (Nikshay Shivir), over 34 lakh vulnerable individuals have been mapped, with more than 10 lakh screened for TB. The initiative has provided nutritional and social support through the Nikshay Mitra program, benefiting thousands; over 2.64 lakh food baskets have been distributed since September 2022. These efforts earned Haryana national recognition for its Nikshay Mitra initiative on World TB Day 2025, and the state achieved the milestone of 1,855 TB Mukt Panchayats in 2024.
As Haryana continues its significant strides in TB management, these initiatives reflect a holistic approach towards eliminating tuberculosis, combining innovative technology, community engagement, and comprehensive health services. Misra’s emphasis on accessible and effective treatment solutions signals a hopeful trajectory in the fight against TB in the state.
With these initiatives, Haryana sets a precedent in public health, showcasing the potential for sustainability and success in achieving the goal of a TB-free future.
