Tingrai Highway Blockade After Fatal Crash: Family Seeks Swift Justice
Public anger erupted on National Highway 38 at Tingrai Bazar under Digboi Police Station on Thursday evening after 52-year-old Ram Dulal Gupta died from injuries sustained in a road accident. Locals placed his body on the highway and blocked traffic, demanding the immediate arrest of the alleged rider and strict legal action.
The blockade brought vehicular movement on NH-38 to a standstill, causing long queues of stranded vehicles on both sides. Protesters raised slogans accusing authorities of negligence and delayed police response, while women, children and relatives of the bereaved family joined the agitation, heightening tensions at the scene.
Gupta, a resident of Tingrai Panikhuwa from an economically disadvantaged family, had been undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, for several days before succumbing to multiple internal injuries on Thursday. According to the report, the accident took place last Friday near the Panikhuwa Auto Stand when Gupta was returning from Doomdooma on his bicycle.
A scooty carrying three people allegedly struck him from behind, leaving him critically injured. He was first taken to Makum Medical College and later referred to AMCH for advanced care, but doctors were unable to save him.
Family members accused the scooty rider of failing to provide immediate medical help at the scene and of not visiting Gupta during his hospitalisation. They also alleged that an FIR was registered only 48 hours after the incident and criticised what they described as a delayed and inadequate response by the authorities.
Police teams from Digboi and Doomdooma stations arrived at the protest site and held talks with the demonstrators. After officers assured that legal proceedings would be initiated under the relevant provisions, the blockade was lifted and traffic gradually resumed.
Police sources confirmed an investigation is underway. Gupta is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son; his sudden death has left the family grieving and has provoked widespread anger in the local community.
