Assam Accord implementation minister Atul Bora told the state assembly that 1,421 people identified as illegal foreigners were deported between February 1, 2025 and January 31, 2026. Replying to a question from MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita, Bora said the expulsions were carried out following directives issued by the state Home (House-to-House) Department. He added that, separately, 52 persons were expelled under the Immigration Act of 1950 between December 20, 2025 and January 31, 2026 — of these, 51 were declared foreigners and one was a newly identified entrant.

Bora said the ongoing identification process under the Assam Accord has so far flagged more than 170,000 alleged illegal foreigners in the state. Providing a historical breakdown, he said 137,152 people who entered Assam after March 24, 1971 up to December 31, 2025 have been identified as illegal entrants, while another 33,485 who arrived between 1966 and 1971 have also been so classified. He said roughly 31,000 illegal entrants were pushed back across the Indian border over the past four decades; 29,663 were pushbacks recorded between 1985 and March 12, 2013, and 468 persons were sent back through deportation procedures between March 13, 2013 and January 31, 2026.

On border security, Bora told the assembly that installation of barbed-wire fencing along Assam’s border with Bangladesh is nearly complete, with 228.541 kilometres fenced to date. Work on a 4.35-kilometre stretch in the Sribhumi area remains stalled owing to objections from the Bangladesh Border Guard. He said riverine stretches that cannot be fenced are under continuous monitoring through a special integrated border management system operated by the Border Security Force (BSF). Assam’s international boundary with Bangladesh runs for a total of 267.5 kilometres across Dhubri, South Salmara, Cachar and Sribhumi districts, he added.

Regarding on-the-ground security deployments, Bora said 91 BSF outposts provide primary guarding of the border, while 14 Assam Police outposts furnish a second layer of protection; 14 patrol chokis are also active. He said the state government is working to establish an additional 13 Assam Police outposts and 12 border police stations to tighten security further.

Addressing implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, Bora said the committee led by Justice Biplab Sharma submitted 67 recommendations, of which 52 fall within the state government’s remit and are already being acted upon. The remaining 15 recommendations fall under the central government’s jurisdiction and are under discussion with New Delhi. Bora expressed the expectation that full implementation of Clause 6 will provide constitutional safeguards for Assam’s indigenous people.
