Unveiling Hope: Collective Launches Dynamic Tamil Nadu Health Manifesto Ahead of 2026 Assembly Polls

Makkal Nalavazhvu Iyakkam (MNI), the Tamil Nadu wing of the People’s Health Movement, has unveiled a Health Manifesto for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, emphasizing the recognition of health as a justiciable right. This manifesto was launched with the presence of representatives from over 32 member organizations, students, and public health professionals, reflecting a broad coalition advocating for stronger public health systems.

The manifesto is the culmination of extensive consultations with community groups, civil society organizations, and health workers statewide. It articulates pressing demands aimed at transforming public health across Tamil Nadu. Key among these demands is the immediate finalization and notification of a comprehensive State Health Policy. Additionally, the MNI advocates for the enactment of a Right to Health Care Act, which would guarantee free and universal access to healthcare services, ensuring that no individual is left behind.

A critical aspect of the manifesto is its call for increased public expenditure on health, recommending that at least 8% of the Gross State Domestic Product be allocated to the healthcare sector, with a clear emphasis on prioritizing primary healthcare. This injection of funds aims to bolster the foundations of the public health system and improve access for all citizens.

Furthermore, the MNI urges the state government to fill all vacant posts in government hospitals, a move they argue is essential for improving the quality of care and ensuring that essential services are reliably available. The manifesto highlights the need for uninterrupted availability of essential medicines, reinforcing the commitment to providing comprehensive healthcare services to the population.

Another pivotal demand includes strengthening maternal and mental health services, both of which have been significantly impacted in recent years. The manifesto calls for stringent regulations on private healthcare institutions, urging adherence to existing legal frameworks to ensure that patient rights are protected and quality of care is maintained.

The MNI also firmly opposes the expansion of insurance-based and public-private partnership models in public healthcare delivery, arguing that such approaches can undermine the accessibility and quality of services. Instead, they advocate for a public healthcare system that prioritizes the needs of all citizens equitably.

As the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approach, the Makkal Nalavazhvu Iyakkam’s Health Manifesto serves as a critical framework for political candidates, urging them to prioritize health as a fundamental right and a key electoral issue. The collaborative effort behind this manifesto signals a growing demand for systemic change in Tamil Nadu’s healthcare landscape, promising a healthier future for all residents.

With these clear and actionable demands, MNI is setting the stage for a vital discourse on public health, pushing health policies to the forefront of political debate.
