Sushmita Dev: Himanta’s Remarks Threaten Peace in Guwahati
New Delhi: Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev on Sunday accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of “jeopardising” the state’s internal security and disturbing peace through his public statements. Dev made the comments in a post on X and a separate video statement, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited poll-bound Assam to inaugurate several projects. She referenced the Prime Minister’s description of the northeastern states as “extremely sensitive and strategic areas” while urging action rather than rhetoric.
Dev said the chief minister’s remarks were fomenting communal tension. “But what he doesn’t realise is the chief minister of Assam is constantly disturbing the internal peace of Assam,” she said, asserting that such conduct risks destabilising the state. She also cited a legal prohibition, saying, “To provoke enmity between two communities is barred by law, section 196 of the BNS,” and accused Sarma of repeatedly endangering Assam’s internal security.
Drawing a parallel with recent unrest in Manipur, Dev added that similar actions by a chief minister there had “ruined Manipur,” and warned against allowing the same pattern to unfold in Assam. She directly appealed to the Prime Minister, urging him not to “pay lip service” to concerns about the northeast’s sensitivity and warning that those threatening peace are “your own people,” a pointed reference to leaders from the ruling party.
