Thapa Demands Governor Act on Gangtok’s Water Crisis
State BJP president Dr. Thapa met Governor Om Prakash Mathur at Lok Bhawan in Gangtok on Saturday, February 14, 2026, to press for urgent action on a worsening water scarcity in the state capital that, he warned, is already affecting residents and could strain services further during the upcoming tourist peak.
Thapa told the Governor that daily demand for water rises sharply during the April–May tourist season, creating significant challenges in meeting the needs of both locals and visitors. He described the situation as pressing for Sikkim and stressed the need for sustainable, long-term measures rather than short-term fixes.
According to a State BJP press release, Thapa asked the Governor to intervene and help coordinate a response with relevant state departments and the Central Ministry. The release said Governor Mathur expressed deep concern over the issue and assured that proactive steps would be taken to address the water crisis and seek a lasting solution for Gangtok residents. With tourist arrivals expected to increase in coming months, the party and the Governor framed timely coordination between state and central authorities as essential to averting shortages.
